Lose That Back Pain!
Copyright 2005 MHG Consulting Lower back pain is one of the most common ailments people suffer from and approximately 8 out of 10 people will deal with back pain at some point in their life. That's a lot of people… are you one of them? I am. I have bulging, herniated discs and have had low back spasms (that knock me to my knees) and sciatica. I have been on all kinds of pain killers, including narcotics which only mask the problem and is by no means a permanent solution. I have avoided back surgery like the plague as there are so many with horror stories. The only relief I have found is with the proper exercise and stretching. I can assure you will find back pain relief if you do this...

Pain Management Doctors
Pain management doctors in most cases happen to be anesthesiologists. Anesthesiologists ensure that you are safe, pain-free and comfortable during and after surgery. They are also at work in the labor and delivery area, or in doctors' chambers where painful medical tests or procedures are performed. But the methods applied by anesthesiologists have now traveled beyond these familiar territories, and led to the development of a new category of medicine known as pain medicine. In many cases, an anesthesiologist heads a team of other specialists and doctors who work together to alleviate your pain. The anesthesiologist or other pain medicine doctors like neurologists, oncologists,...

Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Pain

Author:
Marcus Peterson

Pain is defined as a manifestation of a tissue damage that is brought about by a stimulus. Most multi-cellular organisms, especially animals are found to possess the ability to feel pain or irritation. Some plants are also known to have the ability to retract from certain stimulus. Pain is quite debilitating and only the person suffering realizes the agony involved.

Pain can either be acute or chronic in nature and is classified according to the extent to which it is felt. Short duration, severe spasms are the common characteristics of acute pains, whereas those that are long drawn are usually symptoms of chronic pain. Pain is region specific, depending on the location of the trauma.

Medical experts are of the opinion that the extent of pain indicates the severity of the medical condition. It is recommended that it should be regarded as the fifth vital sign, after the other manifestations of a disease. They also insist in standardizing pain assessment throughout the treatment.

Different pains have varied idiopathic origins. Chronic lower back pain has a more insidious onset and occurs over a long period of time. The various causes of lower back pain include rheumatoid arthritis, degeneration of the discs between the vertebrae or tumors. Back pain may be the result of trauma to the spine, muscles and nerves and may radiate from any portion of the back. The pain is manifested as a tingling or burning sensation, a dull ache or sharp pain. Weakness may also be experienced in the legs or feet.

Modern medicine has made it possible to handle pain in a more rational manner and has also come up with drugs that can dull the otherwise severe pain. The marvels of modern science in the sphere of medicine have greatly contributed to the elimination of pain.

It is a field that is gaining lot of recognition and importance. The pain experienced can be eliminated by medication, under the guidance of trained physicians. Acute pain, that is a result of trauma, is often reversible and may require measures for correction of the underlying problem. On the contrary, chronic pain often results from conditions that are difficult to diagnose as well as cure and may take a long time to reverse. These include cancer, neuropathy and referred pain. In such conditions, the pain management is dealt with separately. The pain is considered to be a symptom of the disease itself. Pain management is generally benefited from a multidisciplinary approach. This involves the use of analgesics and narcotics, including interventional procedures and physical therapy. It also involves psychological measures that involve biofeedback and cognitive therapy. Pain management practitioners are experts from the various fields of medicine. Generally, pain fellowship trained physicians are physiatrists, anesthesiologists, neurologists and psychiatrists. They are proficient in pain management and use pharmacological pain management that involves trying to alleviate pain by the use of drugs. Others use interventional pain management for the same objective. Pain relief and management is a major area of medical care that has the attention of health care providers and nursing personnel.
